US CORN GROWERS WARNED OF NEW STARLINK PROBLEM 14 Feb 2001 by Reuters reporters U.S. farmers were yesterday warned to prepare for the possibility of unapproved gene-altered StarLink corn seed that did not germinate last year sprouting this season and contaminating their crops. The caution on "volunteer StarLink seed" was issued by the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA). "The danger is volunteer StarLink corn pollinating surrounding non-StarLink corn plants, further compounding the problems of keeping StarLink out of the supply of U.S. corn," Fred Yoder, head of the NCGA's Biotech Working Group said. StarLink corn, which is not approved for human consumption due to concerns that it might trigger allergic reactions, was discovered in U.S. food products last September, leading to an eventual recall of more than 300 food items.
